Ladies, this post is way behind but better late than never right? As a midwest living girl, that deals with the cold front for 7 months, a good coat is ESSENTIAL. Confession: I have waaaayy too many coats, I’m like a collector at this point, but with my experience, you can SAVE money and splurge on just ONE with my advice :).
The signature puffer coat is the way to go for warmth, style, and long-lasting wear. It can withstand zero degree temperature, snow, and keep you warmer than a standard coat. My first taste in this category was when I first moved to New York 10 years ago. I had never seen a puffer before (I felt like it was harder to find cute puffers) and I spent my first winter freezing to death. As a west coast person, puffers weren’t something I had in my closet.
My first puffer was inexpensive but I felt so dowdy in it and wore it for warmth only. I finally invested in a nicer one the next year and it was well worth it. I still wear my Mackage jacket and that was so long ago! Come this year, I finally got a Canada Goose coat with the perfect fit and color I wanted.
If you splurge on one item, I definitely recommend it be a coat. Worn every day, it’s a staple piece you’ll have for years and one great quality coat is better than 5 affordable ones that may not last more than a few seasons. Within splurge coats, there are categories of coast/jackets I think every girl should have in their closet.
A Puffer, Trench Coat, Leather Jacket and a Wool Coat. These cover all weather types and styles that you can dress up or down. And I know you readers love steal versions of these items so below are those as well! Most are a fantastic price and I searched for fashionable versions of the splurge-worthy ones.
Questions/Tips for shopping a splurge worth coat:
#1 Ask yourself, which type of coat will you use for the most months. Here in the midwest and east coat a puffer/down is a must have. If you are on the west, I would spurge for a leather or trench.
#2 Color, for my first coat I went for black. Something I could wear forever
#3 Fit, keep in mind what you usually wear and wear the coat over it for fit. Do you want it to be slim fit or regular fit?
#4 Fashionable and/or functional. I want both but tend to veer towards fashionable too much. BUT for splurge-worthy items I demand both
#5 Cost – if the price tag is high, can you use it for 5 years? 10 years? Will you buy another coat to replace this one? Like my Canada Goose coat – I’m set I won’t be buying another down coat for a long time.
Hope these questions helped! *You can scroll over my collage and go directly to the coat to shop!
